Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

My girlfriend's cat is dying of cancer. My girlfriend is terribly upset. Would it be appropriate to get her another cat right after he dies? If so, would you suggest the same breed or a totally different one?

You have your heart in the right place. But, you have to remember that a pet is like a member of the family. In that light, it would not be a good idea to get another pet too soon after the death of her cat. Give your girlfriend some time to grieve. Then, offer to buy her a new pet, and let her choose.
