Baby Shower Out of State

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

My son and daughter-in-law are expecting their first child (my first grandchild) next February. They live out of state near her parents, and we see them maybe once a year when they visit us. Jane will most likely be given a shower by her mother, but it would be difficult for me to travel so I do not plan to attend if invited.

We have many relatives near me who would love to have a baby shower for Jane. Would it be proper for me to host a shower for my daughter-in-law, and do you think Jane's mother might object?

Signed,

First grandchild on the way

Dear First grandchild on the way,

It would be fine to host a baby shower for your daughter-in-law as long as she is asked about it first. Since Jane will be traveling out of state, then the shower should be given well before her due date, so details need to be discussed with Jane. There should be no reason for Jane's mother to object to your hosting a baby shower. More than one baby shower can be given for new moms.
