White Dress at Wedding for Bride Only

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

I was planning to wear a simple white dress to my cousin's wedding, but my mom says that white is only for the bride. Is it really necessary to follow this rule? I just bought this dress and had my heart set on wearing it.

Signed,

Want to Know

Dear Want to Know,

Generally, an all white dress would not be appropriate to wear to the wedding unless you are the bride. The reason guests do not wear all white is out of consideration for the bride so as not to compete with, draw attention away from, or be mistaken for the bride.

However, if you really want to wear the white dress, then add a colorful scarf or belt to offset the all-white look.
