Wedding Gift Not Necessary if Declining

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

My good friend's daughter, who lives out of state, is getting married and I've been invited to the wedding. I cannot afford the airfare or hotel, so I don't plan to go. Do I need to send a gift?

Signed,

Can't really afford to go

Dear Can't really afford to go,

If you decline an invitation to any celebration such as a wedding, birthday, or anniversary, then no gift should be expected. But, often people send a gift to show their fondness for the person even if they cannot attend. Although you cannot go to the wedding, you should at least send a card of good wishes. But, you are not obligated to send a gift.
