We dine with another couple that tend to order expensive meals. Is it okay to ask for separate checks?

If the other couple orders significantly more expensive meals and does not offer to pay more of the bill, then separate checks in the future would be fine.

However, call the restaurant to find out their policy about separate checks. Before placing your order with the wait staff, let them know that you would like separate checks. Also, when making dinner plans with the other couple, let them know that you feel it would be easier to have separate checks than trying to split the bill.
