Engagement Ring Needs New Setting

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

My fiance gave me a beautiful diamond engagement ring. A few months later, I found out from my sister-in-law-to-be that the ring belonged to his former wife who passed away six years ago. I now feel odd and uncomfortable wearing it. Should I say anything to my fiance or am I being overly sensitive?

Signed,

Just deal with it?

Dear Just deal with it,

Communication is very important in a relationship, so speak up about your feelings regarding the ring. Some people are fine about wearing the ring of a former spouse, but if you are not, then a compromise needs to be worked out. A good way to start the conversation is to say how lovely the ring is and how much you love your fiance, and then gently say how you feel about wearing the ring that belonged to someone else. Suggest that the diamonds be remounted in a new setting that the both of you pick out.
