Man's First and Last Names Never Separated - Fact or Fiction

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

I believe I read this in Dear Abby or Miss Manners, that when addressing an envelope the man's name comes after the wife's because the man's first and last name should never be separated. Can you tell me if this is correct?

Signed,

Whose name comes first?

Dear Whose name comes first,

Instead of addressing the envelope formally for married couples with titles such as Mr. and Mrs. John Doe, the envelope can be addressed without titles using both first names for informal correspondence.

Some folks feel that it is only proper to write Jane and John Doe in order to keep the man's first and last names together. However, there is no strict etiquette rule governing the order of the names. Either Jane and John Doe or John and Jane Doe would be fine.
