Military Ball Dress Length





Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

I will be attending a military ball, and the invitation says "formal" attire. I know what this means for military personnel, but now as a civilian I'm not so sure. Can I wear a dress that hits just below the knee (silk sheath with matching tailored jacket), or should I go with a long dress?

Proper dress for a military ball is semi-formal or formal. Generally, a long evening gown would be appropriate, but an elegant knee length dress is also acceptable. Some areas of the country are more formal, so wearing a long dress may be the better choice. If unsure, it would be fine to call the host to inquire about appropriate attire.
