Evening Handbag Decisions

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

I have several handbags that are "fancy" with flowers, rhinestones, and feathers. Would these be appropriate for evening functions, or should the handbag match the outfit. For example, I will be wearing a simple sleeveless velvet dress, so should the evening bag be velvet and simple, too?
