Skirt Length for Formal Gown

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

I have a long ball gown skirt that touches the floor depending on the type of shoes that I wear. What length should a floor length gown be? Should it touch the floor?

Signed,

Curious

Dear Curious,

For comfort and practicality, it would be best if the skirt did not actually touch the floor. The hem would have a tendency to get caught on your shoe, get dirty, or frayed. A good length for floor length gowns is at least 1-2 inches above the floor.

Gowns that sweep the floor or have trains are more appropriate for walking the red carpet.
