Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,
My husband went out and bought a U.S. flag to display in front of our home for July 4th. It will be on a staff on our front windowsill. He plans to put it up just a few days before the 4th of July and leave it there for a few days after. Is that proper to display the flag before and after Independence Day, or just on the day?
Signed,
Flag flack
Dear Flag flack,
Generally, the custom is to display the U.S. flag only from sunrise to sunset. If displaying the flag 24 hours a day, it should be illuminated during the hours of darkness. Also, do not display the flag during inclement weather, unless an all weather flag is used.
The flag can be displayed to honor many occasions and holidays throughout the year. Flag Day is June 14 and a great time to display the flag. Some of the other days to display the flag are listed by the U.S. Flag Code (2007):
The flag could be displayed on all days, especially on (U.S. Code, 2007):
1. New Year's Day, January 1
2. Inauguration Day, January 20
3. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, third Monday in January
4. Lincoln's Birthday, February 12
5. Washington's Birthday, third Monday in February
6. Easter Sunday (variable)
7. Mother's Day, second Sunday in May
8. Armed Forces Day, third Saturday in May
9. Memorial Day (half-staff until noon), the last Monday in May
10. Flag Day, June 14
11. Independence Day, July 4
12. Labor Day, first Monday in September
13. Constitution Day, September 17
14. Columbus Day, second Monday in October
15. Navy Day, October 27
16. Veterans Day, November 11
17. Thanksgiving Day, fourth Thursday in November
18. Christmas Day, December 25
