Boutonniere Placed on Left Lapel

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

I attended a family reunion where all the "special" male guests received boutonnieres. However, no one seemed to know or care on which side to pin them, so some men had then on the right and some on the left. Someone said that the women's corsages go on the left, so the men's go on the right. Is that true? Does it matter?

Signed,

Stuck

Dear Stuck,

Boutonnieres are also placed on the left side. For proper placement, the stem of the boutonniere is actually put through the small button hole in the left lapel assuming they were wearing a jacket or sportcoat. Depending on the size of the boutonniere, you could secure the stem with a pin on the underside of the lapel.
