Black Tie Means Wear a Tuxedo

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

I received an invitation to a party that stated "Black Tie." Does this mean that I need to wear a tuxedo? Can I get away with just wearing a dark suit and tie?

Signed,

Don't Own a Tux

Dear Don't Own a Tux,

If the invitation specifically states, "Black Tie," then, yes, you are expected to dress accordingly and wear a tuxedo. You have the option of wearing a tux or a dark suit if the invitation states "Black Tie Optional," "Black Tie Preferred," or "Black Tie Invited." If you don't own a tux, you can rent one. But, if you think you'll be going to more formal events, then buying a tux would be best.
