Gift Not Required for Announcements





Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

We received a birth announcement from a relative. This is their third child. Are we supposed to send a gift?

Dear Wondering,

You are not obligated to send a gift after receiving a baby announcement, or any announcement (i.e. wedding, graduation). Only send a gift if you feel close to or are very fond of the family. If you don't send a gift, a congratulatory card would be nice. Announcements should be sent to convey the happy news, not to solicit gifts.
