Marriage Announcement and "No Gifts" Etiquette

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

My fiance and I have decided on a short and simple ceremony with no guests. We will be sending out announcements to our family and friends after the marriage has occurred. Because we have both been married previously and had our own households, we do not need nor do we want any wedding gifts.

Is it in appropriate to include a statement in the marriage announcement about no gifts? If so, how should it be worded?

Signed,

Many thanks!

Dear Many thanks,

It would not be appropriate to include any mention of gifts or "no gifts" on the announcement. Folks are not expected to send a gift for a wedding or marriage announcement, so you probably don't need to be concerned about getting gifts. But, if you are asked about what you would like for a gift, then let the person know that you would prefer no gift. If you do receive a gift, accept it graciously and send a nice thank you note.
