Shower Can Be Given for Adopted Baby

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

I am a single female planning to adopt a baby. One of my coworkers wants to give me a baby shower. However, another coworker pointed out that it may not be proper to give a baby shower for an adopted baby. Also, it may not be proper since I'm not married. If it is okay to have a shower, should the invitations state that the baby is adopted?

Signed,

Soon to be Single Mom

Dear Soon to be,

A baby shower can be given for any new baby regardless if biological or adopted. It also doesn't matter if the adoptive parent is single or married.

You don't need to say anything in the invitation about the adoption unless you wish to. If the baby is older and would not fit into infant clothes, then the invitation might state the age of the baby, i.e. "We are welcoming a new 2 year old son into the family." This would give guests an idea of appropriate clothing or toys for the child.
