Hyphenated Names Properly Listed Alphabetically

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

When putting together a list and the last names are hyphenated, do you put the very last name in alphabetical order? For example, is Jane Doe-Smith filed under Smith?

Signed,

Help for hyphenated names

Dear Help for hyphenated names,

For hyphenated and compound names, file the names under the first last name. For example, Jane Doe-Smith would be filed under Doe-Smith, Jane.

Compound names such as Mary St. John would be filed under St. John, Mary.

Another example given in the "ARRANGEMENT OF CARDS IN THE PUBLIC CATALOGUE" by Princeton University (http://imagecat1.princeton.edu/ECC/cardhelp.html) is Juan Blanco de Paz which would be filed Blanco de Paz, Juan.
