Plane Clothes May Save Your Skin

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

I had heard something on TV about not wearing synthetics on an airplane. Do you know what they are talking about?

Signed

Didn't quite get it

Dear Didn't quite get it,

Yes, wearing clothing made of synthetic fabric is dangerous in the event of a plane crash and subsequent fire. The fire will cause the synthetic fabric to melt onto the person's skin, thus causing a more serious burn.

Wear clothes made of natural fibers such as cotton. Women also need to remember to not wear nylons or synthetic underwear when traveling by airplane. In addition, wear sensible shoes. Comfortable low heeled shoes that lace will stay on your feet and protect them in the event of an accident.
