Bunk Beds Okay With Safety Tips

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

My two boys share a room and have been begging for a bunk bed. Do you think it's a good idea for kids who share a room to have one?

Signed,

Can't Decide

Dear Can't Decide,

If your boys are old enough and responsible enough to follow safety rules for having such a bed, then it would free up a lot of space in the room. Be sure and buy a sturdy set, and make sure that the gap between the frame and the guardrail of your bunk bed is no more than three and a half inches, or a child can slip through and accidentally hang themselves. Even if the bed will be against the wall, it should have guardrails on all sides. It is also recommended that a child should be over six years of age to be able to sleep on top. In addition, only one person allowed on the top bunk.
