HIV/AIDS Red Ribbon Never Out of Style

Dear Dr. Dave & Dr. Dee,

I've seen the AIDS red ribbons on some lapels, and wondered, are those still in style?

Signed,

Style Conscious

Dear Style Conscious,

HIV/AIDS red ribbons are in style and a good way to promote awareness and show support for HIV/AIDS research. December 1st is World AIDS Day, and October is AIDS Awareness Month.

To date, there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. According to the Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov), in the United States over one million persons are living with HIV. In 2006, over 56,000 new cases of HIV infections occurred in the U.S. (2009). The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS estimates that in 2007, 33 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS, which includes 2 million children under age 15. About 370,000 children under the age of 15 became infected in 2007, a decline in new infections since 2002 because of the expansion of services to prevent mother-to-child transmission (2008).
